Add a Wi-Fi location and choose a package

A location is one place with Wi-Fi, such as a café or one hotel. It’s priced by the most devices online at the same time in a month.

  1. Go to the Wi-Fi Hotspot menu and click Add a location.
  2. Name the location, then give a rough size (rooms, tables or seats, access points, people online at once). We suggest a package.
  3. Choose how long to keep the log: 90 days, as the law asks, or 1 year. Choosing 1 year costs nothing on its own; the log is billed by its size (below).
  4. Choose Monthly, or Yearly to pay 12 months ahead for the price of 10.
  5. Click Add and pay. Today the wallet pays the rest of this month for the days left, and on Yearly the 12 months ahead too.
PackageDevices online at oncePer monthFree log (first 90 days)
S30US$9.902 GB
M100US$19.904 GB
L300US$39.9012 GB
XL1,000US$79.9040 GB
Enterprise100 to 5,000 (more: contact Sales)From US$19.904 to 200 GB (4 GB per 100 devices)

The usage log is billed by the size actually stored, at the same price as Object Storage (about US$0.03 per GB-month; the pricing page shows the current price). Each package keeps the logs from the first 90 days free up to the GB in the table, so a place of the package’s size normally pays nothing. Past that, and for every log older than 90 days on a location that keeps 1 year, you pay per GB-month, measured every hour and billed at each month end with the location. The Console shows each location’s log size, its free allowance, and what this month’s log costs so far.

Each location chooses what happens when more devices are online at once than its package holds (in the location’s Settings tab, and you can change it any time):

  • Keep new devices off: once exactly as many devices as the package holds are online, a new one is told the Wi-Fi is full and gets on when another leaves. Devices already online keep working. Nothing extra is billed.
  • Pay per use (the default): nobody is turned away. On S, M, L and XL, going up to 20% over costs nothing (Enterprise counts from the first device past the size you chose); past that you pay for the devices over × the hours they are on, at 1.5 times the package’s own price per device (about US$0.0003 per device-hour on S; 10 devices over for 2 hours every day of a month comes to about US$0.18), billed at each month end from the first month over, yearly plans included. If the Wallet cannot pay it then, it stays owed as unpaid usage and is taken from your next top-up. While the project owes usage, the location only takes as many devices as its package (new devices past that are turned away) until it is paid.

Pay per use is meant to cost more than the right package: when a month’s pay per use comes to more than moving up would add, the Console suggests the bigger package. Current prices are always shown in the Console before you pay.

Wi-Fi works on every website package, Free included, so a place that only wants Wi-Fi pays only for Wi-Fi. On Free each location renews on its own at the end of each month; on a paid package it renews with your package.

Paying yearly: what is in and what is not

Yearly pays the location’s package 12 months ahead for the price of 10. Charges that depend on what is actually used are still billed at each month end as usual.

  • When it starts: you pay the rest of this month for the days left at the monthly price, and the next 12 months for the price of 10.
  • At the end of the year: it renews for another 12 months at the yearly price by itself. To go back to monthly, choose Monthly under Billing any time; it takes effect when the paid year ends.
  • Moving up mid-year: you pay the difference for the rest of this month, and for each month paid ahead at the yearly rate (10/12 of the monthly difference). The new size works at once.
  • Moving down: takes effect when the paid year ends; until then the location keeps the size it paid for.
  • Deleting the location: it keeps working until the paid year ends, then closes. There is no refund for the months left (see the Terms of Service).
  • Yearly works on every website package, Free included. Projects under an Enterprise contract are billed monthly on the contract only.

If the wallet is short when a location renews, it is paused: guests can’t sign in, but the log is still kept. A location paid yearly isn’t paused for renewal before its year is up, but if the project is suspended for an unpaid package or usage, yearly locations are paused too and come back by themselves once it’s paid, without paying for the paid time again.

If something goes wrong

I want to pay yearly instead of monthly

Open the location’s Settings tab and choose Yearly under Billing. You pay 12 months ahead, after what is already paid, for the price of 10. Going back to monthly takes effect when the paid year ends; there is no refund for the months left.

The location shows Paused

The wallet was short at renewal. Top up, then click Turn back on on the location.
