Wi-Fi for patients and relatives kept apart from the staff network

Relatives staying the night need the Internet, and the hospital’s working network must not mix with visitors. Give patients and relatives a Wi-Fi code at registration, let staff join with their own accounts, and have the log the law asks for kept for you.

Patients and relatives

  • Print Wi-Fi codes at registration or on the ward, lasting 1 hour, 1 day, 7 days or 30 days to match the stay.
  • Set devices per code (1–10) and a speed limit, so no one slows the network for everyone else.
  • A sign-in page with the hospital’s brand opens over HTTPS, so phones show no security warning.

Staff use their own accounts

  • Doctors, nurses and staff sign in with Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, or with users you create in the console, over WPA2/WPA3-Enterprise (802.1X).
  • Each group has its own VLAN, speed and devices per person, keeping staff devices apart from visitors.
  • Revoke the certificate of a lost device or a leaver straight away.

Keeps working when the line drops

  • The on-site Hotspot Server still signs people in with existing codes and keeps the log on disk, then sends it up when the Internet is back.
  • Use several, one per building, or keep the access points and routers you have if they check with RADIUS.

The log and personal data

  • Every connection is logged under the Computer Crime Act, kept for 90 days or 1 year and sealed in a hash chain.
  • Every search and export needs a reason, and who looked is recorded.
  • If hospital policy keeps everything on site, use the Perpetual License installed on the hospital’s own machine.
