How Wi-Fi Hotspot works: from joining Wi-Fi to keeping logs

Guests join your Wi-Fi, see a sign-in page, enter a code and get online. Every connection is recorded, as the law requires.

It works with the router you already have or with our Hotspot Server. The steps are the same for guests; the only difference is what shows the sign-in page (see Connect your equipment).

Step by step, following the numbers

  1. The guest picks your shop’s Wi-Fi name on their phone.
  2. Your router or the Hotspot Server opens the sign-in page by itself.
  3. The guest enters a Wi-Fi code. The system checks the code is still valid, how much time is left and how many more devices can use it.
  4. The internet opens for the time and speed set on the code.
  5. Every connection is recorded and kept for the period you chose. The Hotspot Server still signs guests in and keeps logs when the internet drops, and sends them once it’s back online.

What the shop needs

  • An internet line and access points at the shop (we don’t sell equipment).
  • A router that supports RADIUS, such as MikroTik, UniFi or Omada, or a Linux machine with 2 LAN ports for the Hotspot Server.
  • A Wi-Fi location in the Console, with a package big enough for the number of devices online at the same time (see Add a Wi-Fi location).
