Solutions Database Migration

Move your database here while your app keeps running

Copy everything from the server you run today, keep it in sync with the engine’s own replication, and cut over when you are ready. Your app stops for minutes, not hours, and the migration itself is free.

From where you are today

  • PostgreSQL to PostgreSQL, MySQL to MySQL and MariaDB to MariaDB, from your own server, Amazon RDS or another cloud.
  • Migrate and keep in sync: copies everything, then follows the source’s changes until you cut over.
  • One-time copy for small databases or when writes can stop for a while.
  • Data flows straight from the source into the new database over TLS; the source password is stored encrypted.

Checked before and after

  • Checks before the move: versions, permissions, binary log or logical replication settings, tables without a primary key, missing extensions.
  • See how far behind the source the new database is while it syncs.
  • Cutover waits until it has caught up, copies sequence values and compares row counts table by table.
  • A failed copy is retried for you, and cancelling removes what the migration made on the source.

Safer once it lands

  • High availability with a standby in another zone, and synchronous replication when you can’t lose a write.
  • Point-in-time recovery to any second, restored into a new database.
  • Storage that grows by itself, scheduled backups, and major version upgrades that go back on their own if they fail.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the downtime?

With continuous sync, only the minutes of cutover: you stop writes to the source, the new database catches up and counts rows, then you point your app at it.

Can I move from Amazon RDS?

Yes. Turn on rds.logical_replication for PostgreSQL, or keep the binary log in ROW format for a day or more for MySQL and MariaDB, then follow the checks on the Migrate in tab.

Does it cost anything?

The migration is free. The new database is billed by the hour like any managed database, from about $5.99 a month for the smallest size with 10 GB SSD.

Are users and permissions moved?

No. The data belongs to the new database’s main user; add other users and passwords afterwards on the Users & passwords tab.
